Our Story

The Longhorn Tribune started in the fall of 2021 with four UT Austin students, a shared Google Doc, and an uneasy feeling that a lot of what happened on the Forty Acres never made it into print. Campus news existed, but it wasn't always written by the people living it. So we started writing it ourselves.

The initial coverage was straightforward: gameday recaps, local campus reporting, and student commentary published to a basic site. As readership grew across campus group chats and student groups, we expanded from a single shared document into dedicated desks covering News, Sports, Opinion, and Campus Life.

In 2024 we launched en Español, our Spanish-language section. UT has thousands of students who grew up speaking Spanish at home, and their families read the news too. Publishing in both languages is the most Longhorn thing we do.

Today The Longhorn Tribune is an independent, student-run publication covering news, sports, campus life, and opinion at UT Austin. We don't take editorial direction from the university, we don't run a story we can't stand behind, and we correct our mistakes in public. Our staff turns over every few years, the way every college newsroom does, and each new group inherits the same job of writing about the news that matters to Longhorns most.
